Bait Tips for Bream, Snapper, Whiting and More

Author: John Reece

If you're looking for some fresh ideas for bait to try for bream, flatheads, whiting and more, why not have a look at some of these tried and tested suggestions. There's some tips for ground bait as well as suggestions for what to put on your hook.

Bream/Trevally:
Despite being shy, Bream can be attracted with a good ground-bait or chum trail. Combat the shyness of these guys by opting for a light line and keep as little lead as possible on your rig

Baits: Chicken Gut, Fish Pieces, Nippers, Prawns, Worms

Rigs: Beach Rig, Bottom Rig, General Running rig,

Flathead:
Drop-offs, weed beds and gutters are great places to find Flathead. They regularly lie in wait. I've had the most success by keeping the bait moving slowly and trying to position it close to the bottom.

Baits: Fish Pieces, Live Mullet, Pilchards, Prawns, Squid   Rigs: Gang hook rig, General running rig, Paternoster rig   Mullet/Garfish
Like the Flatheads, garfish and mullet are commonly found throughout estuaties and bays that have weed beds, where they prefer to congregate. Ground bait such as tuna oil soaked breadcrumbs will bring fish from a wider area and increase your chances of success.
Bait: Prawn pieces, Bread, Worms
Rigs: Beach rig, Quill or pencil flat rig   Mulloway
Fishing at night, with very fresh bait, will increase your chances of catching Mulloway, which are large, shy fish. Cast near gulleys and gutters, where they can be found feeding. Be patient, because if you get a bite you need to give the fish a few moments to swallow it, as it swims away then starts eating.
Baits: Fresh Squid, Live mullet, Live yellowtail   Rigs: General running rig, Floater rig   Snapper
If you're looking for snapper, try their feeding time at dusk and dawn. That way you'll have more success as these fish are shy. Put down some ground bait to improve your chances, and follow that up with a lightly-weighted bait. As with the mulloways, give the fish chance to swallow the bait before making your move.

Baits: Pilchards, Squid, Prawns, Fish fillets   Rigs: Bottom rig, Floater rig, General Running rig   Tailor The Tailor fish is a lively species that prefers to school. Voracious feeders, especially around dawn and dusk, they can be seen swimming just below, and breaking the surface of the water. Try spinning by deep drop offs for some of the best results.

Baits: Garfish, Pilchards, Whitebait   Rigs: Bobby cork gang rig, Ganged hook rig   Whiting The best place for Whiting is where the feed, on the edge of sandy drop-offs. Try adding on a red coloured bead or small piece of tubing above the hook to further entice the fish.    Baits: Worms, Nippers, Prawns, Pippies Rigs: General running rig, Beach rig I hope you catch more with these bait ideas. Happy Fishing!
