What is jigging?

The word jigging refers to the practice of fishing with a jig. In jigging, the fishing lure moves with a jerky motion vertically through the water, instead of horizontally, as with conventional lures. The lure, or jig, is made of a lead sinker. This is why a jig is also known as a “leadhead.” The jig has a hook molded to one end to trap the fish. This arrangement is covered with a brightly colored, soft body to attract the fish. Jigs are widely used in both saltwater and freshwater fishing.

The head of a jig comes in many different colors and shapes. The heads may be round, fish shaped, or conical.
